Landscape, “Huerta” and Water

The municipality of Murcia can only be understood through the important role that water and the ‘Huerta’ have had in the transformation of its landscape, history and collective identity.

This area aims to promote mechanisms for the enhancement of the landscape and the historical and cultural heritage of the Murcian Huerta, regarding both its material cultural assets (real estate and movable objects of artistic, historical, archaeological, ethnographic, scientific and technical, among others) and intangible cultural assets (oral traditions, social customs, knowledge and techniques related to crafts and traditional agriculture).

To this purpose, this area's main objective is the programming of activities that involve the active participation of entities, institutions and groups that share the same purposes in order to enrich the cultural life of the city, as well as the coordination of the different associated spaces: the Science and Water Museum, the Contraparada Visitor Centre, the Zaraiche Palm Grove, the Armero Mill, the Batán Mill, the Amor Mill and the Gunpowder Mill.

The Museum of Science and Water is located in Barrio del Carmen, was inaugurated in 1996 and is one of the main centres of scientific dissemination in Murcia. It has a permanent exhibition room in which visitors can learn about different aspects related to water, such as its physical properties, the importance of its management in our society or its relationship with life on our planet. It also has a temporary exhibition hall in which samples of different scientific topics are periodically premiered; the Discover and Imagine Room dedicated to children, in which they are invited to develop their sensory capacities; and the Planetarium, with a extensive programming that includes screenings in dome format and live sessions.

The Contraparada Visitor Centre is a space dedicated to this special place where the Murcian ‘Huerta’ was born. Its different rooms are dedicated to the origin, history and evolution of the Segura River, the Murcian Huerta and Contraparada itself, and can be visited in the context of such an important and unique environment.

The Zaraiche Palm Grove is an exceptional landscape within municipality that has more than 150 years old, and is one of the emblems of the Huerta.

The area also has four historical spaces related to mills. The Armero Mill has recently been acquired by the City Council. In this enclave, the old mill for manufacturing paprika, some remains of the Arab wall and a garden of municipal ownership of about 5,000 square metres stand out. The Batán Mill is an outstanding example of a medieval hydraulic mill, originally linked to an Islamic tower that has now disappeared. Its environment is a unique landscape and heritage resource in the Murcian Huerta. The Amor Mill is located at the end of Paseo del Malecón, and has an open and landscaped space of about 3,700 square metres, as well as a one-story building of about 160 square metres, recovered through a comprehensive rehabilitation of the building. Finally, the Gunpowder Mill is a rehabilitation carried out by the City Council in the area of Los Canalaos. It has an esplanade, a viewpoint located over the riverbed of the Alcequia Mayor Aljufía and different explanatory panels of this unique place in the Murcian Huerta.
