Ramón Gaya Museum
The Ramón Gaya Museum building is a visually stunning manor house painted in "loving yellow", in the words of the architect José María Hervás, and with the traditional characteristics of 19th century architecture, located in the ancestral and lively Plaza Santa Catalina, in which in, in past times, the Al Cartayani Mosque had settled.Murcia City Council acquired the building to house the collection donated by Ramón Gaya.
The house was rehabilitated and fitted out by the municipal architect Miguel Ángel Beloqui, who, respecting all its compartments, adapted it to be a Museum capable of displaying a painting collection that "moves" and makes the viewer "feel and live" the painting of Ramón Gaya.
Of the original building, the façade with its balconies, railings, oriel and the main staircase with its exterior windows were preserved.
All these representative elements of Murcian architecture and, through them, the exterior “dusty and warm” Murcian light, shimmering and tinged by the square, have housed the Museum exhibition rooms where the collection hashung since 1990. Ramón Gaya's life s work turned into a collection.
