Corregidores and Mayors’Hall

From Corregidores to Mayors: a journey through the political history of Murcia led by local authorities of the last six centuries.
In 2018, the new Corregidores and Mayors’ Hall was inaugurated, with the exhibition ‘From Arenal to La Glorieta: Tribute to our Corregidores and Mayors 1394-2015’.

Since thenthis hall, which is located on the first floor of City Hall, in addition to paying tribute to the political history of the municipality throughpublic representatives who have embodied local authority over the last 620 years, serves as an exhibition space of high testimonial value in successive temporary exhibitions, collects both images and centenary official documents that have written the history of our people.

For the first time, this hall allows us to contemplate, in a historical tour, all the municipal representatives that have passed through the city throughout its history: from magistrates and initial royal representatives, to the current public positions that preside over and represent the municipality, the mayors.

In the municipality of Murcia, 261 magistrates and mayors from 1394 to the present day have been documented. There were a total of 124 “Corregidores”, andthe appointment of mayors began in the 19th century, in 1820, counting 137 todate. The names of each and every one of them have been engraved on the natural wood slats that decorate the upper perimeter of the Hall.

The new space, which has a surface area of 270m2, was designed with two purposes in mind: as a prelude to the Plenary Hall, conceived as a place for official receptions, and on the other hand, to display new samples of historical interest and municipal relevance.
