Artillery Barracks Project

Artillery Barracks Project

The implementation of this large-scale cultural project is one of the main actions framed within the municipal strategy "Murcia is Culture", which involves a change in the management of municipal artistic spaces. The strategy will facilitate the development of creative projects, since artists will be able to present their artistic initiatives at any time of the year, facilitating their production and dissemination, proposing exhibitions, workshops, and creative projects to develop in municipal centres. The Artillery Barracks will be the first centre to promote this new management model.

To develop this project, Murcia City Council rehabilitated Pavilions 1 and 2 of the Artillery Barracks in order to promote research, production, training and the dissemination of creativity in all its disciplines. The work carried out involved a global investment of 3,148,264 euros, and has been 80% co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) and the European Social Fund (ESF), within the framework of the Operational Programme for Sustainable Development 2014-2020, with the DUSI Strategy.

The main objective of this innovative project, which involves the opening of a new interdisciplinary work centre, is to support creators in all their stages, embracing creative thinking in all its disciplines and artistic manifestations.

Through open spaces, the development of cultural and creative activities in the Artillery Barracks allows the exchange of opinions, reflections and perspectives, creating enriching and motivating experiences. Likewise, the refurbished pavilions, measuring more than 5,400 square metres, will have multipurpose rooms to hold meetings between artists and neighbours.

These pavilions will host creative residences, as well asfamily activities, training courses and trade workshops, specialised in lighting, sound, computer programmes, music production, 3D design and video games, among others. Likewise, the Artillery Barracks will host artistic exhibitions and shows, becoming the social and cultural nucleus of the Barrio del Carmen neighbourhood through projects that address challenges related to coexistence in urban environments, mobility, street games, quality of life, loneliness, cultural diversity and historical memory.

The Artillery Barracks will also promote research, development and innovation, articulating projects in collaboration with universities, technology centres and private companies, with the aim of managing and promoting culture jointly, between public and private entities. Collaborative links and synergies will be strengthened with other cultural centres located within the Barracks, such as the Párraga Centre, the Conservatory of Music, the Municipal Library and the University of Murciathrough collaborative management projects, and the pavilions will show the works and production to educational centres of the municipality.
