River Mills

Integrated into a site declared of historic and artistic interest, the River Mills were rehabilitated by an agreement signed in December 1985 between Murcia City Council, the General Directorate of Architecture and Housing of the Ministry of Public Works and Urbanism and Murcia Regional Government.

The objective that was undertaken then was to convert the old flour mills into a Cultural Center and Hydraulic Museum. The project was entrusted to the architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg, whose proposal was based on the return to the most genuine and ancient aspect of the mills, guaranteeing the preservation of a monument and some very unique pieces of industrial archaeological heritage.

The building, inaugurated in 1989, is included in the top ten of that decade in Spain. Its use since then has been, mainly, the permanent exhibition of the facilities of the flour mills and the continuous programming of temporary exhibitions, which shared the intention of deepening and disseminating historical, ethnographic and archaeological aspects of our culture.

Since 2008, the River Mills/Caballerizas has opted for a new proposals that enhances contemporary art and contemporary culture in its programming, both in the exhibition spaces and in the auditorium, with the idea of structuring a new way of viewing in which there is a constant dialogue between the past and the art and culture of the 21st century.
