Amor Mill
A new space to enjoy Murcia’s “Huerta” and its rich heritage. The Amor Mill has a garden of 3,700 square meters, and will become a place for culture that will include concerts, exhibitions and activities to disseminate the “Huerta” heritage. It will also be a centre for agro-ecological research in collaboration with the University of Murcia (UMU). Its planned opening to the public will include the participation of neighborhood collectives and Huerta associations and grupos.
The property, which almost came to be a in ruins, is now a municipal-owned building, which has a foundation of about 160 square metres, and has been recovered thanks to a comprehensive rehabilitation of the building. The Amor Mill is located at the end of the Paseo del Malecón, next to La Ñora Road, on the border between La Arboleja and La Albatalía.
This historic enclave culminates the urban green itinerary integrated by “Murcia Río” and El Malecón, and is included in the La Aljufía route, a 12.5-kilometer natural area that runs through this major canal and in which hydraulic mills, heritage elements and “Huerta” natura landscapes can be enjoyed.
The works, in addition to renovating the construction, have made it possible to recover a good part of its history. With the help of a team of archaeologists, the original channels that were used for the operation of the mill and the vestiges left on the land by the different occupations that the building had will now be shown. Some paintings found on the walls (a duel between two swordsmen) suggest that the building was already in service in the mid-17th century.
The documentation handled by the specialists indicates that the mill was in the hands of the Augustinian nuns and that the flour used to make unleavened bread for the Cathedral came from here. At the end of its days, in the 1970s, the building served as a dining room for the employees of the nearby Caravaca canning factory. From this past, the industrial chimney still stands.
